Rajeev Sharma :- Europe is witnessing an unprecedented spell of extreme heat, with several countries struggling under soaring temperatures and prolonged heatwave conditions. The severe weather has disrupted daily life across the continent, while authorities continue to issue warnings over worsening conditions. France has reported at least seven deaths linked to the ongoing heatwave, while the United Kingdom has shattered temperature records that had stood for more than a century.
Heat Dome Intensifies Crisis Across Europe
Meteorologists have attributed the alarming rise in temperatures to a powerful “heat dome” phenomenon currently hovering over parts of Europe. The high-pressure system traps hot air close to the ground, preventing cooler air from circulating and causing temperatures to climb rapidly. Weather experts have warned that the pattern could persist for several more days, or even weeks, further aggravating the crisis.
France Reports Multiple Heat-Related Fatalities
French authorities confirmed that seven people have lost their lives in incidents associated with the extreme weather conditions. Several deaths were linked to drowning incidents in lakes, rivers and coastal areas as people attempted to seek relief from the heat.
In Paris, a 53-year-old participant collapsed and died from a cardiac arrest during a running event amid the scorching temperatures. In another incident, a woman in Lyon reportedly succumbed to heatstroke, raising fresh concerns about public safety during outdoor activities.
Sporting Events Cancelled Amid Rising Temperatures
France’s Sports Ministry stated that several sporting events had to be cancelled due to the dangerous weather conditions. The country’s meteorological agency also recorded the hottest day ever observed in the month of May and warned that temperatures could continue rising throughout the week.
Authorities have issued orange alerts for Paris, Brittany and several other regions, with forecasts predicting temperatures could touch 36 degrees Celsius in many areas.
Britain Witnesses Record-Breaking Heat
The United Kingdom has also experienced extraordinary weather conditions, with London’s Kew Gardens recording a temperature of 34.8 degrees Celsius — surpassing the previous May record by nearly two degrees.
Britain has now registered its hottest May day twice within a span of 24 hours. London also experienced a rare “tropical night,” where temperatures remained above 20 degrees Celsius even after sunset, depriving residents of overnight relief.
Climate Change Blamed for Extreme Weather Patterns
Climate experts believe the escalating intensity and frequency of such heatwaves are closely linked to human-driven climate change. Scientists warn that rising global temperatures are making extreme weather events more severe, longer-lasting and increasingly dangerous across Europe and other parts of the world.
