Gurpreet Singh :- Punjab’s newly introduced Jagat Jyoti Sri Guru Granth Sahib Satkar Bill 2026, aimed at preventing sacrilege incidents and ensuring stricter punishment for offenders, is receiving growing support from both the public and political circles across the state.
In a significant political development on Tuesday, several prominent leaders and workers from the Shiromani Akali Dal and the Congress formally joined the Aam Aadmi Party after expressing support for the legislation. The induction ceremony was conducted by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann’s OSD Rajbir Singh Ghuman.
Leaders who joined the ruling party stated that previous governments had “politicised” the sensitive issue of sacrilege instead of ensuring justice. They claimed that the Mann government, by introducing the bill, had demonstrated genuine commitment and respect towards Sikh sentiments and religious values.
The leaders further asserted that the strict provisions proposed under the legislation would create fear among anti-social elements attempting to disturb communal harmony in Punjab. They also said the move would help preserve peace and religious tolerance in the state.
Addressing the gathering, Rajbir Singh Ghuman assured the new entrants that they would receive full respect and responsibility within the party organisation.
Among the prominent leaders who joined AAP were Kitu Grewal, former Punjab Congress women’s wing president and member of the women and child welfare committee; Satpal Singh, former PUNGRAIN chairman; Kamaldeep Singh Rana Warka, Punjab Congress general secretary; Samandeep Kaur, Congress women’s cell president from Malout; Hardev Singh, former Block Samiti chairman and BC wing in-charge from Attari; Charanjit Kaur, Block Samiti member; Gurmel Singh, former Zila Parishad candidate from Talwandi Sabo; Jaskaran Singh Jathwal, former Congress general secretary; along with several other local leaders and former sarpanches from different parts of Punjab.
