Calgary (Rajeev Sharma): The return of rodeo season is bringing renewed energy to communities across Alberta, with the provincial government stepping up support to strengthen rural tourism and local economies.

With more than 100 rodeo events scheduled annually, towns and cities across the province are preparing to welcome large crowds to arenas, fairgrounds, and exhibition sites. These events—ranging from grassroots competitions to major stampedes—play a vital role in attracting visitors and sustaining small businesses.

Officials say continued funding through Travel Alberta has helped expand the reach of these events. Between 2023 and 2026, over $1.3 million has been allocated to support marketing efforts, infrastructure improvements, and event hosting in rural areas.

Tourism and Sport Minister Andrew Boitchenko highlighted the importance of rodeos as a unique cultural experience, noting that they showcase the province’s western heritage while also driving economic activity in smaller communities.

Agriculture and Irrigation Minister RJ Sigurdson described the season as a celebration of Alberta’s deep-rooted ranching traditions, where communities come together to honour their shared history.

Data from the Canadian Professional Rodeo Association shows a significant rise in attendance, with last year’s events drawing more than half a million spectators. The increase reflects growing interest in rodeo culture and its expanding role within the tourism sector.

Industry leaders say the benefits extend well beyond entertainment. Revenue generated from rodeo events is often reinvested into local infrastructure, including upgrades to arenas and fairgrounds, while also supporting year-round employment for those involved in livestock and event management.

Community representatives emphasize that rodeos also foster social connections, offering opportunities for families and youth to engage in cultural traditions while strengthening local identity.

As the season unfolds, the province aims to further position Alberta as a leading destination for rodeo enthusiasts, while ensuring sustained growth for rural communities that rely on these events.
