Kolkata (Rajeev Sharma): The second and last phase of Assembly elections in West Bengal got underway on Wednesday, with polling taking place across 142 constituencies that are expected to play a crucial role in determining the state’s political direction.
Balloting started in the morning across major regions such as Kolkata, Howrah, Hooghly, Nadia and the 24 Parganas, where voters were seen arriving early at polling booths. Election officials reported orderly arrangements and smooth conduct during the initial hours.
This phase is being closely watched as it covers areas that have historically supported the ruling All India Trinamool Congress. The opposition Bharatiya Janata Party is aiming to improve its position in these constituencies and mount a strong challenge.
Security has been significantly tightened, with central forces deployed in sensitive zones to prevent any untoward incidents. Authorities have emphasised maintaining peaceful voting and ensuring voter safety throughout the day.
Ahead of polling, Narendra Modi appealed to residents to participate actively, encouraging a high turnout to strengthen democratic values.
With the electoral battle reaching its final stage, the outcome of voting in these constituencies is expected to have a decisive impact on the formation of the next government in the state.
