Amritpal Singh Faces Fresh Arrest in Ajnala Case as NSA Detention Nears End

Gurpreet Singh :- Punjab Police has reached Dibrugarh in Assam to initiate the arrest of Khadoor Sahib MP Amritpal Singh in connection with the Ajnala police station incident, as his detention under the National Security Act (NSA) is set to expire on April 22. Currently lodged in Dibrugarh jail, Amritpal is likely to be brought to Punjab on a production warrant as part of legal proceedings in the case linked to the February 2023 violence.

The case pertains to the attack on the Ajnala police station, where Amritpal Singh and his समर्थਕਾਂ were accused of breaching barricades and clashing with police personnel, leaving several officers, including then SP Jugraj Singh, injured. The situation had escalated further due to the presence of Sri Guru Granth Sahib in a पालकी साहिब carried by protestors, prompting police to exercise restraint at the time. A formal case was registered on February 24, 2023, though immediate action against the मुख्य आरोपी was delayed. Amritpal was later arrested from Rode village in Moga after a prolonged search operation and subsequently detained under the NSA, with extensions granted in 2024 and 2025.

With the expiry of the NSA detention approaching for the second time, Punjab Police, after securing legal approvals from the High Court, is expected to formally arrest him from Dibrugarh jail. The state government has also sought to keep him lodged in Assam under amended jail provisions.

Meanwhile, nine close aides of Amritpal, whose NSA detention was not extended last year, have already been brought back to Punjab and remain in police custody. Following his arrest, trial proceedings against Amritpal Singh are expected to begin, with provisions likely to be made for court appearances via video conferencing.
