Haryana irrigation minister orders urgent flood prevention measures

Chandigarh (Balwinder Singh): Haryana Irrigation and Water Resources Minister Shruti Choudhary held a high-level review meeting in Chandigarh on Monday, April 20, 2026, to oversee flood management preparations ahead of the upcoming monsoon season. The Minister issued strict directives to departmental officials to ensure all necessary precautions are finalized well in advance to prevent any potential waterlogging or flood-like situations across the state.

To prevent delays in essential infrastructure work, the Minister ordered that all tenders related to flood management be invited within the current week. In a move to bolster transparency and accountability, she mandated that payments for any completed work will only be released after thorough verification by a team consisting of the Superintending Engineer (SE), Executive Engineer (XEN), Junior Engineer (JE), and the respective village Sarpanch. This multi-layered verification process is designed to ensure that the quality of work meets state standards before public funds are disbursed.

Further highlighting the government’s focus on quality, Shruti Choudhary directed the formation of a special headquarters-level team to monitor desilting operations. This team will conduct on-site inspections of canals and drains, providing regular reports to ensure that cleaning activities are effective and not merely superficial. The Minister also issued a stern warning against compromising the quality of emergency supplies, such as pipes, pumps, and sandbags, stating that any negligence or substandard procurement would result in immediate disciplinary action against the responsible officers.
