Sri Anandpur Sahib, November 24 — The Punjab Legislative Assembly on Sunday unanimously approved a landmark resolution recognising Amritsar, Anandpur Sahib and Talwandi Sabo as “Holy Cities,” marking a significant cultural and spiritual moment for the state.
The special session, held at Sri Anandpur Sahib to commemorate the 350th martyrdom anniversary of Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji, saw rare unity across political parties as members supported the resolution introduced by Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann.
The three towns, each tied closely to Sikh history, will now be governed under stricter cultural norms. The sale and consumption of liquor, tobacco and meat will be prohibited within their limits. Mann said the declaration honours Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji’s legacy and strengthens Punjab’s commitment to protecting its spiritual and historical values.
The chief minister also announced that the government would earmark dedicated funds to develop the cities and approach the Centre for additional support to improve infrastructure and preserve heritage sites.
The resolution’s passage was widely welcomed, with leaders describing it as a long-awaited step in recognising the sacred character of the three historic locations.
