Rohtak: (Balwinder Singh): Four men accused of murdering 23-year-old Sapna in what investigators describe as an honour-related crime were arrested late Thursday after a dramatic police chase and exchange of fire on the Ladhot–Bohar stretch. Among those detained is the victim’s brother, Sanju, who police say led the group involved in the attack.
The other arrested suspects have been identified as Rahul from Kahni village, and Ankit alias Baba and Gaurav from Rukhi village in Sonepat district. All four suffered gunshot wounds to their legs during the encounter and were admitted to PGIMS Rohtak for treatment under police supervision.
Officers recovered four country-made pistols, multiple live rounds, two magazines and a motorcycle believed to have been used during their escape. Police officials said the group attempted to flee when confronted, prompting the armed response.
Sapna was shot dead at her in-laws’ home on Wednesday night. Her brother-in-law Sahil was injured while trying to shield her. Preliminary findings indicate that Sanju had been angered by his sister’s marriage to a man from the same village, a relationship the family had opposed for years.
Police had been searching for the suspects since the killing, acting on inputs that they were moving between Rohtak and Sonepat. Additional teams remain deployed to determine whether others played a role in planning the attack.
Senior officers said the arrests mark a significant step forward in securing justice for the young woman, adding that further charges will be pressed once ballistic tests and witness statements are completed.
