Kimberley Goddard

Edmonton (Rajeev Sharma): The Alberta government has announced the appointment of Kimberley Goddard, KC, as a justice of the Alberta Court of Justice, Central Region, effective November 17, 2025. Her appointment is part of the province’s ongoing effort to expand judicial capacity and ensure faster access to justice across Alberta.

The new appointment comes as Alberta continues to fill vacancies in the judicial system to reduce case delays and strengthen the delivery of justice in civil, criminal, and family matters. Goddard’s extensive legal background and leadership experience within the Crown Prosecution Service are expected to add significant depth to the Central Region bench.

“Ensuring that all Albertans have timely access to justice is a priority of our government. I congratulate Kimberley Goddard on her appointment and welcome her to the Alberta Court of Justice. Her experience and knowledge will serve her well as a justice,”
said Mickey Amery, Alberta’s Minister of Justice and Attorney General.

Chief Justice James Hunter also praised the appointment, highlighting Goddard’s long-standing dedication to public service.

“Her dedication to public service and experience will be instrumental in our commitment to a justice system that is fair, accessible and responsive to the needs of all Albertans,” he said. “We look forward to the contributions she will make in ensuring timely and meaningful access to justice across the province.”

A Distinguished Legal Career

Raised in Red Deer, Goddard earned her Bachelor of Laws degree from the University of Alberta in 1999 before articling with Chapman Riebeek Barristers and Solicitors. She joined the Edmonton Crown Prosecutor’s Office in 2000, where she handled major criminal cases and became Assistant Chief Crown Prosecutor in 2011.

In 2018, she transitioned to the Alberta Crown Prosecution Service’s Strategic and Business Services Branch as Project Counsel and later as Executive Director. Since 2020, she has served as Assistant Deputy Minister for the Alberta Crown Prosecution Service, overseeing key policy and operational initiatives.

Strengthening Alberta’s Justice System

Goddard’s appointment marks the 34th judicial appointment since June 2023, underscoring the government’s focus on expanding court capacity and improving access to justice.

Returning to her home region, Goddard expressed enthusiasm about continuing her public service in a new capacity. Her appointment is seen as both a reinforcement of local judicial strength and a step forward in addressing caseload pressures across the province.

With this addition, Alberta’s justice system continues to move toward a more efficient, responsive, and community-centered model — one that ensures timely justice for all Albertans.
