Justice Surya Kant Set to Become Next Chief Justice of India After CJI Gavai’s Recommendation

New Delhi (Rajeev Sharma): Chief Justice of India B.R. Gavai has recommended Justice Surya Kant to be appointed as the next Chief Justice of India (CJI) following his retirement on November 23. The recommendation was sent to the Union Ministry of Law and Justice, marking the beginning of the formal process for the top judicial appointment.

Justice Surya Kant, currently serving as a senior judge of the Supreme Court, is next in line as per the convention of seniority. If appointed, he will assume office later next month and serve until February 9, 2027, giving him a tenure of around 14 months as the country’s top judge.

Journey From Hisar to the Supreme Court
Born on February 10, 1962, in Hisar, Haryana, Justice Surya Kant’s rise to the highest judicial office in India is a story of perseverance and dedication. After completing his graduation from Government Post Graduate College, Hisar, in 1981, he earned his Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree from Maharishi Dayanand University, Rohtak, in 1984.

He began his legal practice the same year at the Hisar District Court, before shifting to the Punjab and Haryana High Court in 1985. Over the years, he built a reputation for his clarity in legal reasoning and advocacy. His contributions were recognised when he was designated a Senior Advocate in March 2001.

Justice Kant also served as Advocate General of Haryana, the state’s highest law officer, before being elevated as a judge of the Punjab and Haryana High Court in January 2004. Later, he was appointed Chief Justice of the Himachal Pradesh High Court on October 5, 2018, before joining the Supreme Court of India on May 24, 2019.

An Experienced Judge with a Balanced Approach
Throughout his judicial career, Justice Surya Kant has been known for his pragmatic approach and emphasis on social justice. His judgments often reflect a blend of legal precision and empathy, focusing on fairness and constitutional morality.

He has dealt with a wide spectrum of cases, from constitutional matters to environmental issues, and is regarded for his ability to handle complex and sensitive cases with composure.

Smooth Transition Expected
Justice Gavai’s recommendation of Justice Kant follows the established seniority principle that guides the appointment of the Chief Justice of India. Once approved by the President, Justice Kant will become the 52nd Chief Justice of India.

His tenure is expected to bring continuity to the functioning of the apex court, with several landmark constitutional cases likely to come up during his time in office.

Justice Gavai, who assumed charge as the 51st CJI earlier this year, is scheduled to retire on November 23, paving the way for Justice Surya Kant’s elevation to the country’s highest judicial position.
