Kurukshetra, October 14: Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini on Tuesday inaugurated an electric bus service in Kurukshetra, flagging off ten eco-friendly buses for public transport. Accompanied by former minister Subhash Sudha, the Chief Minister traveled from the sacred Jyotisar the revered Gita Sthali to Kurukshetra University on one of the newly launched buses. During the event, he announced that passengers can travel free of cost in these buses till Diwali.

Speaking at the ceremony organized by the Haryana State Transport Department at Jyotisar, CM Saini said that these electric buses will operate on various routes, benefiting both local commuters and tourists from across the country and abroad. The buses will also serve pilgrims during major events like the International Gita Mahotsav, Solar Eclipse Fair, and Somvati Amavasya.

He further added that the initiative is part of the National Electric Mobility Mission 2020, aimed at promoting zero-carbon public transport. The state government has decided to procure 50 electric buses each for ten municipal corporations Panchkula, Ambala, Yamunanagar, Karnal, Panipat, Sonipat, Rohtak, Hisar, Gurugram, and Faridabad. Rewari will also receive 50 electric buses due to its proximity to Delhi and other NCR cities. A total of 375 air-conditioned electric buses will be operated under the Gross Cost Contract (GCC) model.

Highlighting the progress, the Chief Minister mentioned that e-bus services have already started in districts like Panipat, Yamunanagar, Karnal, Panchkula, Hisar, Rohtak, Rewari, and Sonipat, with ten buses already running in Ambala. With Kurukshetra now added to the list, the state takes pride in leading one of the country’s most eco-friendly urban transport initiatives.

Director General of Haryana Roadways Sujan Singh stated that four routes—Jyotisar, Pehowa, Shahabad, and Ismailabad—have been finalized for the service, with two buses to run between Pipli and Jyotisar. These routes were planned jointly by the district administration and the Kurukshetra Development Board (KDB). He added that the service, already successful in nine districts, will make local travel more convenient and environment-friendly.

The event was also attended by Deputy Commissioner Vishram Kumar Meena, KDB Chairman Dharamveer Mirzapur, CEO Pankaj Setia, Honorary Secretary Upendra Singhal, and other dignitaries.
