Uttarakhand GST Department Busts ₹20 Lakh Tax Evasion Racket in Haldwani; Senior Officer Under Probe

Dehradun, October 12, 2025: The Uttarakhand GST headquarters has uncovered a major tax evasion racket worth over ₹20 lakh in Haldwani, Kumaon, allegedly involving collusion with senior officials at the joint commissioner level.

According to officials, multiple complaints had surfaced about transporters bringing goods into Haldwani while evading taxes. One transporter reportedly received protection from a senior departmental officer, which hindered local enforcement actions.

In a confidential operation earlier this week, GST teams from Rudrapur conducted surprise raids on two transport companies in Haldwani under tight police security. Authorities seized a large quantity of goods transported without proper documentation or using falsified records.

Preliminary investigation revealed tax evasion exceeding ₹20 lakh. Under Section 130 of the GST Act, a total penalty of around ₹25 lakh has been imposed. Both the seized goods and the transport vehicle will remain in departmental custody until the fine is paid in full.

Officials also confirmed that a senior officer allegedly attempted to misuse her influence to obstruct the investigation. This interference is now being probed separately. The GST headquarters reiterated that strict disciplinary and legal action will be taken against all involved, consistent with the state’s zero-tolerance policy toward corruption.

Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, who also holds the Finance portfolio, reaffirmed his administration’s resolve to curb tax evasion and ensure transparency in governance.
