US and India to Restart Trade Talks, Donald Trump and PM Modi Express Optimism

PM Modi Gets Birthday Call From Donald Trump Amid Revival of Trade Negotiations

New Delhi/Washington (Rajeev Sharma): The United States and India are preparing to reopen negotiations aimed at resolving trade differences, with leaders of both nations voicing confidence in reaching an agreement that benefits their economies.

Announcing the development on his platform, Truth Social, US President Donald Trump wrote that discussions on “trade barriers” would soon continue and that he expected the process to conclude smoothly. He also mentioned his upcoming conversation with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, describing him as a “very good friend” and expressing faith that the talks would lead to “a successful conclusion for both of our great countries.”

Responding to Trump’s remarks, Prime Minister Modi said the relationship between the two countries is rooted in friendship and shared values. He stressed that the negotiations would help in “unlocking the limitless potential of the India-US partnership” and confirmed that officials from both sides are already working to wrap up the discussions at the earliest.

The announcement comes against the backdrop of Washington’s recent tariff hikes—50 percent duties on Indian goods and an additional 25 percent surcharge linked to India’s oil imports from Russia. The move had raised questions about the direction of bilateral trade ties, making the decision to resume dialogue particularly significant.

Just days earlier, Trump had spoken at the White House, where he called the India-US bond a “very special relationship.” He reassured that despite differences, he and Modi remain on the same page, emphasizing that there is “nothing to worry about.”

With trade at the center of renewed attention, both capitals are expected to focus on balancing market access, tariff concerns, and strategic cooperation in the coming weeks.
