Nepal Lifts Social Media Ban After Violent Protests Leave 20 Dead

National Times Bureau :- The Nepal government on Monday revoked its recently imposed ban on social media platforms following days of violent protests that claimed at least 20 lives and left over 300 injured. Communication, Information and Broadcasting Minister Prithvi Subba Gurung announced the decision after an emergency cabinet meeting, stating that the order to block 26 platforms, including Facebook and X, has been withdrawn.

The protests, largely led by ‘Gen Z’ activists, erupted in Kathmandu where thousands gathered outside the Parliament building demanding the immediate restoration of social media services. Authorities had imposed the ban three days ago after several platforms failed to register with the government.

Gurung confirmed that directives have been issued to relevant agencies to reinstate access to the platforms. Facebook, X and WhatsApp resumed operations from Monday night. The minister urged protesters to call off their movement, which turned violent when some demonstrators stormed the Parliament complex. Police used water cannons, tear gas and rubber bullets to disperse the crowd.
