Call Grows for Immediate Release of Jaswant Singh Khalra Biopic on His Martyrdom Day

Amritsar, September 5, 2025: Marking the martyrdom day of Bhai Jaswant Singh Khalra, Shiromani Akali Dal (breakaway faction) president Giani Harpreet Singh on Friday urged the immediate release of the long-awaited biopic on the revered Sikh activist. His appeal, made through social media platform X, reignited public demand for the film that has been delayed amid censorship debates.

“Bhai Jaswant Singh Khalra is a great warrior of the Sikh community and human rights who sacrificed his life for justice and truth,” Singh said in his post, adding that the biopic, starring Diljit Dosanjh, must reach audiences without further delay.

The film portrays Khalra’s fearless work in the 1980s and 1990s, when he exposed extrajudicial killings and forced disappearances of Sikhs, before being abducted by Punjab Police in 1995. His disappearance turned him into a symbol of resistance and justice, with his legacy continuing to inspire human rights activists worldwide.

Reports suggest the film has faced resistance over its sensitive subject matter, with calls for cuts before release. However, supporters argue the movie is crucial in educating younger generations about Punjab’s turbulent history and Khalra’s unwavering commitment to truth.

As pressure builds for the film’s release, many view it as a vital step in preserving Khalra’s memory and ensuring his struggle for justice continues to resonate across communities.
