Edmonton — The Alberta government will require most residents to pay a $100 administration fee for the COVID-19 vaccine this fall, while expanding coverage for frontline health-care workers and vulnerable groups.
The rollout begins October 1 for high-priority groups, including health-care workers, home care clients, residents of seniors’ and continuing care homes, people experiencing homelessness, those 65 and older receiving the Alberta Seniors Benefit, and individuals who are immunocompromised. Others will be eligible starting October 20, but must cover the fee unless they fall within the exempt categories. Appointments will remain available until supplies run out or the respiratory virus season ends.
The policy, announced earlier this year, initially excluded health-care workers. Following criticism from unions and public health experts, Premier Danielle Smith said the province reversed course after discussions with the Health Sciences Association of Alberta.
“In consultation with other unions, they wanted to be able to offer it to their members,” Smith said Thursday. “It won’t be mandatory. It’ll certainly be by choice. Any health-care professional who wants an extra measure of protection, we’re happy to support them.”
Public health advocates and the Alberta NDP continue to push for broader access. Opposition Leader Naheed Nenshi argued that charging for the vaccine is unfair and could increase hospital pressures.
“Albertans deserve the same access to this vaccine that every other Canadian gets,” Nenshi said. “The UCP government should reverse this policy immediately and make the shot available to everyone free of charge.”
Other provinces are taking a different approach. B.C. has said Albertans visiting the province can receive the vaccine at no cost, though not at pharmacies and only after B.C. residents are prioritized. Manitoba has pledged free access for out-of-province visitors, while Saskatchewan has yet to confirm whether it will extend the same policy.
Alberta residents are being asked to pre-register for appointments through the province’s vaccine booking system by September 30. Eligible individuals will receive notifications in October to confirm appointments.
