India to Announce New Semiconductor Projects as SEMICON India 2025 Nears

New Delhi, August 22: The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has indicated that the government may soon unveil two to three small semiconductor projects, marking another step in India’s ambitious push for chip manufacturing.

MeitY Secretary S. Krishnan revealed that these projects could be funded through the remaining resources of the India Semiconductor Mission 1.0. Out of the ₹76,000 crore outlay under Semicon 1.0, about ₹64,000 crore has already been committed to chip fabrication facilities, ₹10,000 crore to the Semiconductor Laboratory in Mohali, and ₹1,000 crore for the Design-Linked Incentive scheme.

The ministry is also in talks with the Finance Ministry and other stakeholders on creating a framework for Semicon 2.0, reaffirming the government’s long-term commitment to strengthening India’s semiconductor ecosystem.

The announcement comes ahead of SEMICON India 2025, scheduled from September 2 to 4 at Yashobhoomi, Delhi. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the event, highlighting its importance in the government’s economic and technological roadmap.

This year’s edition of SEMICON India is set to be the largest yet, reflecting rising international confidence in India as a chip hub. Over 350 exhibitors have already registered, nearly doubling last year’s figure. With all 1,100 booths booked, organizers had to turn away additional requests. Delegates from 33 countries are expected, alongside more than 50 CXOs and six country-specific roundtables. State participation has also expanded from six to nine.

A major breakthrough is expected later this year, with the first ‘Made in India’ semiconductor chips projected to roll out from facilities currently under construction. Several companies are competing to achieve this milestone.

Global players such as Applied Materials, IBM, Infineon, LAM Research, Merck, Siemens, TSMC, and Tata Electronics will participate in the event, bringing international expertise to the Indian stage.

Looking ahead, MeitY envisions SEMICON India reaching the stature of global semiconductor events such as Semicon China within the next decade.
