India Sets Firm Policy on Sporting Ties with Pakistan, Eases Visa Rules for Global Officials

New Delhi, August 21 – India has drawn a clear line on sporting ties with Pakistan, linking its approach to the broader diplomatic policy with the neighboring country.

Under the new framework, Indian teams will not travel to Pakistan for bilateral sporting events, nor will Pakistani teams be allowed to play in India in such matches. However, this restriction will not apply to multilateral and international tournaments. Indian players will continue to participate in global competitions even if Pakistan is involved, and Pakistan’s teams will also be permitted to play in multilateral events hosted in India.

The government emphasized that the policy ensures India’s adherence to international sporting practices while protecting the interests of its athletes. At the same time, it underlines New Delhi’s position of keeping bilateral ties with Pakistan limited.

India is also working to bolster its image as a hub for international sports. To achieve this, the visa process for athletes, team officials, technical staff, and office-bearers of global sports bodies will be simplified. Multi-entry visas, valid for up to five years, will be issued on priority for international officials.

The government assured that visiting heads of international sports governing bodies will be accorded due protocol and courtesies as per global norms. The move signals India’s intent to balance its foreign policy priorities with Pakistan while positioning itself as a leading global sports destination.
