Punjab Education Minister Harjot Bains Appears Before Sri Akal Takht Sahib

Punjab Education Minister Harjot Bains Pays Obeisance at Gurdwara Guru Ka Mahal, Will Appear Before Sri Akal Takht Sahib

Amritsar (Gurpreet Singh): Punjab Education Minister Harjot Singh Bains arrived in Amritsar this morning and appeared before Sri Akal Takht Sahib, the highest temporal authority of the Sikhs. Before making his way to the Takht, the minister also visited Gurdwara Guru Ka Mahal and offered prayers.

As per tradition, Minister Bains was seen walking barefoot along the historic Heritage Street toward Sri Darbar Sahib, reflecting a sense of humility and devotion. His appearance comes in response to a summons issued by Sri Akal Takht Sahib, following a recent controversy involving a religious event organized by the state’s Language Department.

The issue arose during a martyrdom remembrance function where Punjabi artist Bir Singh performed devotional songs. However, the event drew criticism after videos surfaced showing dance performances—specifically Bhangra—being carried out on stage, which many in the Sikh community found disrespectful given the solemn nature of the occasion.

Both singer Bir Singh and Minister Bains had earlier issued public apologies regarding the incident. Nonetheless, the matter was brought to the attention of Sikh religious authorities, resulting in today’s summons.

A meeting of the five Singh Sahibans at Sri Akal Takht Sahib was scheduled for 9 a.m. to address the issue and hear the minister’s explanation.

Minister Bains’ decision to attend in person, and in the traditional manner, has been viewed by many as a gesture of respect toward Sikh institutions and religious protocol.

Further details on the outcome of the meeting or any directives issued by the Takht are awaited.
