Stampede Near Mansa Devi Temple Claims Six Lives, Ex Gratia Announced

Haridwar, July 27 – A tragic stampede near the Mansa Devi Temple in Haridwar on Sunday morning claimed at least six lives and left several others injured. The incident occurred during a heavy influx of devotees at the temple, leading to chaos and panic.

In response, both the Mansa Devi Temple Trust and the Uttarakhand government have announced an ex gratia compensation of ₹2 lakh for the families of the deceased and ₹50,000 for each of the injured. Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami confirmed that a magisterial inquiry has been ordered to investigate the cause of the tragedy.

The Chief Minister visited the Haridwar District Hospital to assess the situation and personally check on the injured. He assured that the best possible care is being provided and that all necessary steps are being taken to support the affected families. A toll-free helpline has also been launched for inquiries and assistance.

Medical staff at AIIMS Rishikesh are treating 10 admitted patients, including two children. Four are reported to be in critical condition. Several others with minor injuries have been discharged after initial care. The hospital began receiving patients around 11 a.m., shortly after the stampede took place at approximately 9 a.m.

President Droupadi Murmu expressed grief over the loss of lives in a message shared on social media, extending condolences to the bereaved families and wishing a speedy recovery for the injured.

The incident has cast a shadow over the ongoing religious festivities, prompting fresh concerns about crowd management at pilgrimage sites during peak seasons. Authorities are expected to review safety protocols to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
