PM Modi Interacts With IAF’s Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla Aboard ISS in Historic First for India

New Delhi (National Times): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday made history by holding a live video interaction with Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla, the first Indian Air Force officer and Indian national to be stationed aboard the International Space Station (ISS).

Group Captain Shukla, part of the Axiom-4 mission, became the first Indian to ever step onto the ISS, a moment hailed by PM Modi as “a proud chapter in India’s space journey.”

During their interaction, PM Modi lauded the officer’s courage and achievements, saying, “Group Captain Shukla, you have taken the tricolor into a new orbit — literally. Your mission inspires every young Indian who dreams of the stars.”

The Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) confirmed the interaction via a tweet: “PM @narendramodi interacted with Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla, who is aboard the International Space Station.”

Shukla, who hails from the Indian Air Force, is currently engaged in a series of scientific experiments aboard the ISS as part of India’s deepening involvement in international space cooperation. His participation in Axiom Space’s fourth private mission underscores India’s increasing role in human spaceflight and space diplomacy.

During the call, Shukla expressed gratitude for the opportunity to represent India at such a high level: “It’s an honor to carry the hopes of our nation into space. This journey belongs to every Indian who dares to dream.”

The moment is being celebrated as a giant leap for India’s space exploration ambitions. With ISRO’s Gaganyaan mission on the horizon and India’s private space sector expanding rapidly, Shukla’s milestone serves as a symbol of India’s ascent in the global space community.

The interaction also signals India’s continued focus on building global partnerships and investing in the next generation of space scientists and astronauts.

As India marks this momentous occasion, Group Captain Shukla’s mission is already being viewed as an inspiration for millions and a defining moment for the future of India in space.
