PM Modi Showcases India’s Cultural Heritage Through Exquisite Handcrafted Gifts at G7 Summit in Canada

National Times Bureau (Rajeev Sharma): During the G7 Summit held in Canada, Prime Minister Narendra Modi presented a series of carefully curated traditional Indian handicrafts and artworks to global leaders, each representing India’s rich cultural and artistic legacy.

To Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, the President of Mexico, PM Modi gifted a Warli Painting, a tribal art from Maharashtra’s Warli community. This folk art, characterized by white rice paste on mud walls, captures everyday rural life using basic geometric shapes and often depicts the “tarpa dance,” symbolizing unity and joy.

South Korean President Lee Jae-myung received a Madhubani Painting, also known as Mithila Art, from Bihar. Traditionally practiced by women, this art form is known for its vibrant colors and intricate designs, often depicting gods, nature, and stories of devotion and love using natural dyes.

For Mary Simon, the Governor General of Canada, Modi selected a Silver Filigree Clutch Purse from Cuttack, Odisha. This purse features Tarakasi craftwork, a 500-year-old art using fine silver wires to create delicate, lace-like designs with Mughal and temple art influences.

To Salma Lakhani, Lieutenant Governor of Alberta, Modi presented a Papier Mâché Box with Gold Leaf Work from Jammu and Kashmir. Crafted using recycled paper and adorned with hand-painted floral and bird designs, this artwork reflects the skill of Kashmiri artisans and the region’s tradition of sakhstazi and naqashi.

French President Emmanuel Macron was gifted a Dokra Nandi Sculpture from Tamil Nadu. Created using the ancient lost-wax method, the sculpture represents Nandi, Lord Shiva’s sacred bull. Its open lattice design and bright red saddle bring together spiritual symbolism and artistic elegance.

Friedrich Merz, Chancellor of Germany, received a Sandstone Replica of the Konark Wheel from Odisha. Carved with intricate details, the replica symbolizes time, motion, and the cosmos, inspired by the 13th-century Sun Temple. With 24 spokes, it represents the 24 hours of the day and the cyclical nature of life.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese was honored with a Kolhapuri Silver Pot, a traditional craft from Maharashtra. Made of pure silver and adorned with hand-engraved floral and paisley designs, the pot reflects a blend of aesthetic beauty and ceremonial function.

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa received a Brass Dokra Horse from Chhattisgarh. Handcrafted using the lost-wax technique, the horse symbolizes power, loyalty, and devotion in tribal culture. Its brass body is intricately decorated with bells, harnesses, and twisted wire designs.

Lastly, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, President of Brazil, was gifted a Cane and Bamboo Boat with a Swan Figurine from Meghalaya. This eco-friendly, handcrafted piece uses natural materials and tells the story of the region’s traditional boat craftsmanship and artistic beauty.

Through these meaningful gifts, Prime Minister Modi not only expressed India’s warm diplomatic ties but also brought international recognition to its diverse and ancient artisan traditions.
