Gurpreet Singh :- Efforts to forge a political alliance between Akali Dal (Waris Punjab De) and Akali Dal Punr Surjeet have formally collapsed after weeks of discussions failed to produce a consensus on key ideological issues.
Members of the coordination committee of Akali Dal (Waris Punjab De) announced the breakdown through a joint statement, attributing the failure of talks to “serious ideological differences” between the two factions.
The leaders alleged that certain individuals, who had allegedly lost the moral authority to represent the Panth, were being projected for leadership roles, a move they claimed became a major obstacle in achieving unity.
According to the statement, an eight-member coordination panel had been constituted on April 18 with the objective of building broader Panthic unity and evolving a common political strategy. Several rounds of meetings were subsequently held between the two sides, but no agreement could be reached on crucial matters.
Rachhpal Singh Sosan said both factions had initially agreed to abide by the directions issued by the Akal Takht on December 2, under which controversial leaders were to be kept away from key organisational responsibilities.
However, the Waris Punjab De faction alleged that Akali Dal Punr Surjeet later assigned significant positions to such individuals, hurting Panthic sentiments and weakening mutual trust during the negotiations.
The statement further accused the leadership of Akali Dal Punr Surjeet of repeatedly making “irresponsible remarks” during the course of deliberations, which allegedly damaged the atmosphere required for meaningful dialogue.
According to the Waris Punjab De faction, these developments ultimately ended any possibility of a coordinated Panthic front or broader political understanding in Punjab.
The collapse of the proposed alliance is being viewed as a significant setback for attempts aimed at consolidating Panthic political forces ahead of future political developments in the state.
