Respect Privacy of Armed Forces Personnel, Families: Defence Ministry Issues Advisory to Media

New Delhi, June 3, 2025: The Ministry of Defence (MoD) has issued an official advisory to media organizations across the country, urging them to uphold the privacy and dignity of Indian Armed Forces personnel and their families especially amid ongoing operations like Operation Sindoor.

While acknowledging the media’s vital role in informing the public about the Armed Forces’ achievements and sacrifices, the Ministry expressed concern that certain recent coverage had breached acceptable limits. It noted that some reporters had approached the private residences of senior military officers and attempted to contact their families actions deemed “deeply inappropriate” and potentially compromising to both privacy and safety.

The advisory clearly states that although military officers may serve in public roles, their families are private citizens and deserve respect and protection from unsolicited intrusion.

Key directives from the advisory include:

No personal visits or contact: Journalists must refrain from visiting or contacting the homes or relatives of serving or retired officers unless formally authorized.

No disclosure of personal information: Media outlets are urged not to publish private data such as home addresses, photographs, or family details of Armed Forces personnel.

Focus on professionalism: Reporting should remain centered on operational and leadership dimensions of defence personnel, without veering into speculation or personal domains.

Confidentiality and national interest: During active missions like Operation Sindoor, media must avoid disclosing information that could jeopardize operational security or national interest.

The Defence Ministry emphasized its openness to constructive engagement with the press but appealed for responsible journalism that respects ethical boundaries. The advisory has been issued with the approval of the competent authority, underscoring the seriousness of the matter.
