IPL Set to Resume on May 16 or 17 After Ceasefire; Kolkata May Lose Final Due to Rain Forecast

New Delhi, May 11, 2025 — Suspended amid the India-Pakistan military conflict, the Indian Premier League (IPL) is now expected to resume on May 16 or 17, following the announcement of a ceasefire between the two nations.

The IPL Governing Council and BCCI officials met on Sunday to finalize plans for the resumption of the tournament, which was halted on May 9 for one week due to escalating security concerns. According to BCCI vice-president Rajeev Shukla, discussions are ongoing with franchises and stakeholders to prepare a suitable revised schedule.

An IPL source confirmed that the league is likely to restart with the Lucknow Super Giants vs Royal Challengers Bengaluru match in Lucknow, originally scheduled for May 9. All teams have been asked to recall their players, and the final decision on fixtures will be shared shortly.

The revised plan suggests the remaining 16 matches may be restricted to four or five venues, excluding Delhi and Dharamsala, where equipment has already been cleared. Hyderabad is expected to retain its role as host for Qualifier I and the Eliminator, while Kolkata could lose the final scheduled for June 1 due to a rain forecast, with Ahmedabad being considered as an alternate venue.

BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia stated that the board will consult franchises, broadcasters, sponsors, and state associations before confirming the full schedule. He also emphasized that final approval from the Government of India will be necessary before the league restarts.

The abandoned match between Punjab Kings and Delhi Capitals halted in Dharamsala due to national security concerns may result in both teams being awarded one point each. At the time of suspension, PBKS had scored 122 for 1 in 10.1 overs.

If only a limited number of venues are used, teams like Delhi Capitals, Rajasthan Royals, and Mumbai Indians may lose their home-ground advantage.

As the tournament resumes, the playoff race remains intense among seven teams, with Gujarat Titans currently topping the table with 16 points and a superior Net Run Rate (NRR) of 0.793.
