Rohit Sharma Bids Farewell to Test Cricket, Will Continue in ODIs

National Times Bureau, May 7, 2025: Rohit Sharma, one of India’s most celebrated cricketers, has officially announced his retirement from Test cricket, bringing to a close a significant chapter in his illustrious career. The 38-year-old confirmed the news on May 7 via social media, stating it was an “absolute honour” to represent India in whites, while also affirming he will continue to play One-Day Internationals.

Over an 11-year Test career, Rohit played 67 matches, scoring 4,301 runs at an average of 46, including 12 centuries. Known for his elegant strokeplay and leadership qualities, he took over the Test captaincy from Virat Kohli in 2022 and led India in 24 matches. His calm leadership was praised during tough tours and crucial home series, even though recent form had raised questions — with only one century in his last 19 innings.

The announcement comes ahead of India’s five-Test series against England beginning June 20 in Leeds. The BCCI will now need to consider new leadership, with names like Jasprit Bumrah and KL Rahul being discussed, although Bumrah’s fast-bowling role may complicate full-time captaincy responsibilities.

Rohit’s exit from Tests follows a self-imposed absence from the Sydney Test earlier this year due to poor performance. He had also stepped away from T20 Internationals after India’s historic 2024 T20 World Cup win, signaling a gradual wind-down of his multi-format career.

Rohit’s wife, Ritika Sajdeh, shared an emotional reaction on social media, posting heartbreak emojis — a reflection of the sentiment felt by many fans and teammates alike.

As the cricketing world reacts to the end of an era, India must now look forward, forging new leadership in the Test arena while continuing to rely on Rohit’s experience and talent in the 50-over format.
