Islamabad (Rajeev Sharma)— Amid escalating regional tensions following the deadly Pahalgam terror attack, Pakistan has raised alarm bells internationally by claiming that India is preparing for a military strike within the next 24 hours. The unprecedented claim was made by the Pakistani government on Tuesday, as Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif urgently appealed to the United Nations for intervention to “prevent a crisis in South Asia.”
In an official statement, Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry alleged that intelligence inputs and troop movements suggest an imminent Indian operation targeting specific locations across the Line of Control (LoC). No evidence was publicly provided to back the claim. However, the statement stressed that the alleged preparations are “aggressive and provocative in nature.”
Prime Minister Sharif, addressing the nation late Tuesday, said, “We are a peaceful country but cannot turn a blind eye to threats to our sovereignty. I have personally contacted UN Secretary-General António Guterres to ask for immediate diplomatic intervention.”
The UN has yet to respond formally. However, diplomatic sources said that the global body is “closely monitoring” the evolving situation.
The Indian government has not issued a formal statement in response to Pakistan’s claims. However, high-level meetings chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the past week, including a major security review scheduled for Wednesday, have signaled New Delhi’s intent to address national security with utmost seriousness following the Pahalgam attack that claimed 26 lives.
Analysts believe Pakistan’s statement may be an attempt to preemptively frame any Indian countermeasures as escalatory. “By alleging an Indian strike is imminent, Pakistan may be trying to deflect attention from its own domestic instability and international criticism for hosting terror networks,” said a senior Indian security expert.
This development comes just days after India suspended the Indus Waters Treaty and shut down the Attari border crossing as part of a series of diplomatic measures aimed at isolating Islamabad.
Meanwhile, Pakistan has increased troop alert levels along its eastern borders and is reportedly in communication with allies including China and Russia. There are also reports that Islamabad is pushing for an emergency session of the UN Security Council, though such a request has not been confirmed by the global body.
Security agencies in India remain on high alert, particularly in border states. The Indian Army has intensified reconnaissance operations along the LoC, and air surveillance has been reportedly increased in strategic sectors.
While the region has seen many flare-ups between the two nuclear-armed neighbours, international observers warn that any miscalculation this time could have severe consequences.
