Amritsar/New Delhi, March 7, 2025: The recent removal of Jathedar Raghbir Singh from Sri Akal Takht Sahib has triggered strong reactions from Sikh leaders across the country. Harmit Singh Kalka, President of the Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (DSGMC), has condemned the decision, calling it the “worst day in Sikh history.”
Allegations Against SGPC Leadership
Kalka accused SGPC members of serving the interests of the Badal family rather than upholding Sikh values. He alleged that the committee’s decisions were going against Sikh traditions and principles. “Those who blindly follow political families are making anti-Sikh decisions,” he said.
Political Turmoil in Sikh Institutions
The controversy stems from the social media post by Jathedar Raghbir Singh, where he questioned the SGPC’s earlier decision to remove Giani Harpreet Singh. This led to his own dismissal, sparking widespread debate over political interference in Sikh religious affairs.
SGPC President Harjinder Singh Dhami had also resigned amid the ongoing crisis, deepening the leadership turmoil. Despite appeals from Sikh leaders, Dhami refused to withdraw his resignation.
Growing Criticism and Uncertain Future
Kalka’s strong remarks indicate growing dissatisfaction within the Sikh community regarding SGPC’s functioning. The removal of Jathedars and leadership changes at key Sikh institutions are expected to have long-term consequences for Sikh religious and political affairs.
