SGPC Welcomes Sajjan Kumar’s Conviction in 1984 Sikh Genocide Case, Demands Strictest Punishment

Amritsar, February 12, 2025: Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) President Advocate Harjinder Singh Dhami has welcomed the Delhi Rouse Avenue Court’s conviction of Congress leader Sajjan Kumar in a case related to the 1984 Sikh Genocide, calling for the strictest punishment.

Advocate Dhami stated that the 1984 Sikh Genocide remains one of the darkest chapters in human history, and despite four decades, victims are still struggling for justice, which is a shame for the world’s largest democracy. He emphasized that Sajjan Kumar’s conviction should serve as a precedent and urged that all other accused Congress leaders, including Jagdish Tytler, must also face strict legal consequences. Criticizing the Congress, he said the party had rewarded the perpetrators instead of delivering justice, adding that this court verdict offers some solace to Sikh sentiments.

SGPC has called for all pending 1984 Sikh Genocide cases to be transferred to fast-track courts to avoid further delays. Advocate Dhami also demanded that the Indian Parliament pass a formal resolution offering condolences and an apology for the massacre of innocent Sikh citizens.

The verdict marks a significant milestone in the decades-long fight for justice, with Sikh organizations urging swift and exemplary punishment for all guilty leaders.
