The organization extended condolences to her family and urged governments and law enforcement agencies to strengthen public safety, particularly for international students and immigrant communities across Canada.
Originally from Gujarat, India, Megha had come to Canada to pursue higher education. According to her family, she was stabbed on May 15 in the Niagara Region, but authorities informed them about the incident approximately 10 days later, causing additional distress and concern. Her death has shocked the Indian and Hindu communities across Canada and devastated family, friends, and fellow students.
In its statement, VHP Canada described the incident as a heartbreaking tragedy that highlights concerns about the safety and well-being of international students living far from their families and support networks. The organization noted that recent incidents involving violence, intimidation, vandalism, and threats targeting immigrant and religious communities have heightened feelings of insecurity among many residents.
While emphasizing that investigations must follow facts and due process, VHP Canada said community concerns about personal safety are growing. It urged federal, provincial, and municipal authorities, along with agencies including the Niagara Regional Police Service and Public Safety Canada, to strengthen preventive measures, improve coordination, and ensure faster responses to violent crimes. The organization also called for enhanced protections for international students, increased police presence in vulnerable areas, better monitoring of hate-motivated incidents, and stronger collaboration among authorities, educational institutions, and community organizations.
The Niagara Regional Police Service has confirmed that the investigation remains ongoing and that no further details have been released as authorities continue examining the circumstances of the case.
The Consulate General of India, Toronto (Consulate General of India, Toronto) has also expressed sorrow over the tragic death of Vidhi Megha and is understood to be in contact with local authorities and the bereaved family, extending all necessary consular assistance and support during this difficult time.
Adding to the response, the National Times Media Group has also expressed concern over the incident and formally sent a request letter to the Premier of Ontario and the Prime Minister of Canada, urging a comprehensive and transparent investigation into the matter. The media group also emphasized the need for stronger safety measures for international students across Canada, referencing growing concerns within immigrant communities regarding violent incidents and delayed communication in serious cases. It further noted that recent incidents in Edmonton involving the deaths of Indian youth have intensified public concern, with community members continuing to seek clarity and timely investigative updates in such cases.
VHP Canada also appealed to Hindu temples, cultural organizations, student associations, and community leaders across Canada to support efforts to strengthen public safety and community confidence. The organization stressed that every individual, regardless of faith or background, deserves to live, study, and work without fear.
The organization concluded by extending its deepest condolences and prayers to Vidhi Megha’s family, stating that her death underscores the need for safer communities and stronger protections for students, newcomers, and all Canadians.
