Uttarakhand Government Cracks Down on Illegal Madrasas; CM Pushkar Dhami Warns of Closure for Non-Compliant Institutions

Dehradun, October 8: The Uttarakhand government has taken a major step against illegal madrasas operating in the state. Chief Minister Pushkar Dhami announced that madrasas failing to align their curriculum with the state government’s education board will face closure.

Addressing the issue, CM Dhami stated that Uttarakhand, being Devbhumi (Land of the Gods), should provide proper education and values to children. Several madrasas were found operating illegally, with substandard teaching levels and suspicious student identities, including some from Bangladesh and Rohingya communities. Over 250 illegal madrasas have already been closed, and authorities have ensured that students follow the government-approved curriculum. From July 1, 2026, madrasas failing to comply will have their registrations revoked.

Operation Kalanemi Targets Fraudulent Religious Activities

CM Dhami highlighted Operation Kalanemi, aimed at exposing individuals misusing religious institutions to commit fraud. More than 6,000 cases have been investigated, and arrests have been made. The operation focuses on identifying people pretending to be saints or sewadars while misleading the public.

No Exam Paper Leak Occurred

Regarding recent claims of a paper leak, the CM clarified that it was not an official leak but an incident where an individual took photos of exam papers from a centre. Prompt action was taken, and those responsible were arrested. Dhami emphasized that genuine paper leaks occur only when the exam content is released before the examination, which did not happen.

Focus on Disaster Preparedness and Development

CM Dhami also spoke about the state’s disaster management efforts, emphasizing relief measures and early warning systems for landslides and heavy rainfall. He highlighted the support of the Prime Minister and Union Home Minister during this year’s natural calamities.

Preparations for Winter Pilgrimage

The government has completed preparations for the winter phase of the Char Dham Yatra, ensuring safety and convenience for pilgrims. CM Dhami assured that travelers would have a smooth experience during both the Char Dham and winter pilgrimage seasons.

Madarsa Board Dissolved Amid Rising Concerns

Dhami rejected allegations that he spent ₹1,000 crore on publicity to enhance his image, stating the state has made historic decisions, including UCC law implementation, removal of illegal encroachments, and dissolution of the Madrasa Board due to rising numbers of suspicious individuals. The CM praised the ongoing Operation Kalanemi and highlighted several successful events organized by the state, including Investor Summits and the Char Dham Yatra, which drew over 400,000 participants this year.
