Washington (Rajeev Sharma): A large-scale immigration enforcement operation in the United States has resulted in the detention of 30 Indian nationals who were allegedly residing in the country unlawfully while working in the commercial trucking sector. The action forms part of a broader federal campaign aimed at identifying undocumented individuals operating heavy vehicles on American roads.
The arrests were carried out by officials from the US Border Patrol’s Yuma Sector during a targeted operation conducted in Arizona earlier this month. Authorities said a total of 52 people suspected of immigration violations were taken into custody, including 36 individuals employed as semi-truck drivers.
Among those detained, Indian nationals accounted for the overwhelming majority. The remaining drivers were from a handful of other countries, including Mexico, El Salvador and Russia.
Federal officials stated that several of the drivers possessed commercial licences issued by different US states. However, investigators found that many were allegedly no longer authorised to work in the country, while some reportedly lacked valid driving credentials altogether.
American authorities described the operation as part of efforts to improve public safety and ensure compliance with immigration and transportation laws. Officials argued that commercial vehicle operators must meet both legal residency requirements and professional qualification standards because of the responsibilities associated with driving large trucks on public highways.
The detained individuals are expected to face immigration proceedings that could ultimately lead to their removal from the United States.
The operation comes amid a broader push by US authorities to tighten oversight of employment practices involving foreign nationals and strengthen enforcement measures in sectors considered critical to public safety.
The arrests have drawn attention due to the significant number of Indians involved, highlighting the challenges faced by some migrants navigating complex immigration regulations while seeking employment opportunities abroad.
As federal agencies continue similar enforcement actions, immigration compliance within the transportation industry is likely to remain under close scrutiny in the months ahead.
