US-Brokered Talks Lead to Three-Week Extension of Israel–Lebanon Ceasefire

Lebanon/Washingtoon (Rajeev Sharma): A fragile ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon has been extended for another three weeks following diplomatic engagement led by the United States, officials confirmed after discussions in Washington.

The breakthrough came after a meeting hosted by Donald Trump at the White House, where representatives from both nations reviewed the security situation and agreed to continue the pause in hostilities. The talks were attended by Israeli envoy Yechiel Leiter and Lebanese ambassador Nada Moawad.

The extension follows a period of heightened tension along the border, including recent strikes that resulted in casualties. While the agreement offers temporary relief, underlying issues remain unresolved, particularly the role of Hezbollah, which was not involved in the negotiations.

After the meeting, Trump indicated that Washington would continue to support Lebanon in strengthening its internal security, while also encouraging both sides to pursue dialogue. He described the discussions as constructive and expressed optimism about further diplomatic progress.

Lebanese officials welcomed the extension, viewing it as an opportunity to stabilise the situation and avoid further escalation. The Israeli side has not publicly detailed its position but agreed to the continuation of the ceasefire framework.

There are also indications that future talks may involve senior leadership, with Trump suggesting potential meetings with Benjamin Netanyahu and Joseph Aoun in an effort to push for a more lasting arrangement.

While the ceasefire extension provides short-term calm, analysts caution that sustained peace will depend on broader negotiations and regional dynamics linked to the ongoing conflict in West Asia.
