TVK Edges Toward Breakthrough in Tamil Nadu as Counting Trends Favor Vijay’s Party

Tamil Nadu (Rajeev Sharma): Early results from the 2026 Assembly elections in Tamil Nadu suggest a major political shake-up, with the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) emerging as the frontrunner. Led by actor-turned-politician Vijay, the party is rapidly closing in on the halfway mark in the 234-member Assembly, raising the possibility of a historic first victory.

Counting began early Monday morning under tight security across the state, with officials releasing constituency-wise updates at regular intervals through the Election Commission’s platforms. As rounds progress, TVK has established leads in a significant number of seats, indicating strong voter backing across regions.

The trends point to a challenging day for the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), which appears to be trailing behind not just TVK but also other contenders in several constituencies. The scale of the shift has surprised many observers, particularly given the DMK’s recent dominance in state politics.

In key contests, Chief Minister M. K. Stalin is currently behind in the Kolathur seat, while Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin is also trailing in Chepauk–Thiruvallikeni. These early setbacks for top leaders have added to the sense of an unfolding upset.

At Anna Arivalayam, visuals showed a subdued atmosphere, with arrangements made for celebrations being taken down as the trends became clearer. In contrast, areas such as Panaiyur and Neelankarai saw enthusiastic gatherings of TVK supporters anticipating a landmark outcome.

Although counting is still underway, the momentum appears to be firmly with TVK. If the current pattern continues, the election could mark a turning point in Tamil Nadu politics, introducing a new leadership dynamic and reshaping the state’s political future.
