Toronto (Rajeev Sharma): A 32-year-old Toronto man has been arrested in connection with the alleged murder of his 30-year-old Indian-origin partner, Himanshi Khurana, nearly seven months after she was found dead at a residence in the Canadian city.
Toronto Police said Abdul Ghafoori was taken into custody at a Toronto airport on Friday. He had been wanted on a first-degree murder charge after investigators linked him to Khurana, whose death was later classified as an incident of intimate partner violence.
Investigation began after woman was reported missing
Police were alerted at around 10.41 pm on December 19 after receiving a report about a missing woman in the Strachan Avenue and Wellington Street West area.
A search was launched, and officers discovered Khurana’s body inside a residence in the same area at approximately 6.30 am the following day. Investigators subsequently determined that she had been killed.
The case was recorded as Toronto’s 40th homicide of 2025.
As the investigation progressed, police established that Khurana and Ghafoori had been in an intimate relationship. Authorities then issued a Canada-wide warrant seeking his arrest and circulated his photograph while appealing for information about his whereabouts.
Fugitive located after international coordination
According to Toronto Police, officers from the fugitive squad and homicide unit worked alongside Canadian and international law enforcement agencies to locate Ghafoori.
The authorities did not reveal where he had been staying during the period he was wanted. His eventual detention at a Toronto airport brought a months-long search to an end.
Ghafoori is facing a first-degree murder charge in connection with Khurana’s death. The allegation will be dealt with through the Canadian judicial process.
Indian Consulate had contacted family
Khurana’s death had prompted a response from the Consulate General of India in Toronto. The mission had expressed shock over the killing and conveyed condolences to her family.
The consulate had also said it was coordinating with local authorities and providing assistance to the bereaved family following the incident.
The latest arrest represents a major development in the investigation into Khurana’s death, with the case now moving forward through the court process.
