Thunderstorms, Gusty Winds to Persist in Punjab as Monsoon Nears State Borders

Punjab Braces for Light Rain in Seven Districts as Monsoon Nears Exit

Chandigarh (Gurpreet Singh): A fresh spell of unsettled weather is expected across Punjab over the next 48 hours, with meteorologists forecasting scattered rainfall, thunderstorms and strong winds in several districts as monsoon conditions gradually strengthen over northern India.

The India Meteorological Department has issued a weather advisory for multiple districts, warning of lightning activity and gusts that could accompany rain-bearing clouds. The changing weather pattern follows isolated showers reported in parts of the state and increasing cloud cover across several regions.

According to weather officials, atmospheric systems influencing Punjab continue to remain active, creating favourable conditions for intermittent rainfall. Northern districts are expected to receive the highest impact, while central and eastern regions may also witness brief but intense spells of rain and thunderstorm activity.

Despite the recent showers, temperatures remain elevated in many areas. Bathinda recorded one of the highest daytime temperatures in the state, highlighting the continued presence of summer heat ahead of the monsoon’s full arrival.

Rainfall distribution has remained uneven this month, leaving Punjab with a noticeable precipitation deficit compared to seasonal averages. However, meteorologists believe the latest weather activity could improve moisture levels and provide some relief to agricultural regions awaiting more consistent rainfall.

The weather department noted that the influence of a western disturbance combined with local cyclonic circulation is driving the current instability. These systems are expected to keep weather conditions fluctuating over the coming days, with periods of sunshine alternating with clouds and rain.

Electricity demand across Punjab has remained high, reflecting ongoing cooling requirements amid warm temperatures. Power utilities continue to monitor consumption closely as weather conditions evolve.

Forecast models indicate that the southwest monsoon is steadily advancing and may reach Punjab by the final days of June if current conditions persist. While an official declaration is awaited, weather experts say the state is entering a transition phase between pre-monsoon activity and the onset of the rainy season.

Residents have been advised to remain alert during thunderstorms, avoid open fields during lightning activity and follow local weather updates. Farmers have also been urged to plan field operations carefully in view of possible rain and strong winds.

With additional showers expected and monsoon currents drawing closer, Punjab is likely to witness a more active weather pattern heading into the final week of June.
