Sudbury (Rajeev Sharma): Four teenagers from Chelmsford, Ontario, are facing multiple criminal charges after allegedly firing BB guns and fireworks at pedestrians from a pickup truck in downtown Sudbury.
The Greater Sudbury Police Service (GSPS) received several emergency calls shortly before 10:00 p.m. reporting that occupants of a moving pickup truck were discharging fireworks and pellet guns at individuals in the downtown core. As officers began searching the area, additional reports came in indicating the suspects were continuing to shoot at pedestrians, resulting in one person being struck by a BB pellet.
Through the initial investigation, police obtained the truck’s license plate number and tracked the vehicle northwest to Chelmsford. Officers located the vehicle at approximately 10:40 p.m. and arrested all four occupants—two 18-year-old men and two 17-year-old male youths. A search conducted during the arrest led to the seizure of multiple pellet guns and ammunition.
All four individuals have been formally charged under the Criminal Code of Canada with:
- Pointing a firearm
- Discharging a firearm with intent
- Assault with a weapon
- Possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose
The four suspects were released on undertakings and are scheduled to appear in court later this fall. Police stated that the names of the two 18-year-old adults are being withheld pending formal court processing, while the identities of the two 17-year-olds are protected under the Youth Criminal Justice Act
