Supreme Court Refuses Urgent Hearing on Plea Against ‘Cockroach Janta Party’

New Delhi (Gurpreet Singh): The Supreme Court of India refused to grant an urgent hearing on a petition seeking punitive action against the “Cockroach Janta Party” (CJP), a satirical digital outfit that has recently gained significant traction across social media platforms. A bench led by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant declined the request for an out-of-turn listing, stating that the matter would be heard in the due course of time. Addressing the petitioner’s advocate, NK Goswami, Chief Justice Surya Kant remarked not to take the matter so sentimentally, affirming that the situation lacked any grave urgency.

The petition, filed by advocate Raja Chaudhary, targeted the digital organization for allegedly engaging in the commercial exploitation and distortion of the apex court’s previous observations. Beyond the actions against the CJP, the public interest litigation sought a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into broader systemic issues within the legal fraternity, including fake advocates, fraudulent law degrees, and impersonation within legal practice. The plea cited a recent statement by Bar Council of India (BCI) Chairman Manan Kumar Mishra, who claimed that nearly 35 to 40 per cent of individuals practicing in courts wearing black coats and bands are operating with fake credentials, demanding an independent investigation into those claims.

The controversy stems from remarks made by the Chief Justice on May 15 regarding individuals who acquire fraudulent degrees to enter professional spaces and target public institutions. Following media reports that misconstrued his words as comparing the nation’s youth to cockroaches, the Chief Justice issued a formal clarification the following day, labeling the reports completely baseless. He emphasized his immense pride in India’s youth, describing them as the pillars of a developed nation. The petitioner lamented that despite this official clarification, the CJP has continued to leverage the distorted commentary for online engagement, merchandise sales, and satire branding.
