New Delhi (Rajeev Sharma/Gurpreet Singh): The Monsoon Session of Parliament is expected to witness intense exchanges from its opening day, with the ruling NDA and the Opposition gearing up for a confrontation over a range of political and public interest issues.
Ahead of the session, the Centre held an all-party meeting to seek cooperation for the smooth conduct of parliamentary business. While the government emphasised the need for productive debates and timely passage of legislation, Opposition parties outlined several issues they intend to raise during the proceedings.
Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju appealed to political parties to ensure meaningful discussions inside the House rather than frequent disruptions. He said the government was committed to taking up important legislative business and expected all members to contribute constructively during the session.
However, the all-party meeting itself reflected the political divide, with members of the Trinamool Congress staging a symbolic protest over the presence of rebel MPs. The issue of their status added to the already charged atmosphere before Parliament convenes.
Among the major matters likely to dominate the session are concerns over the alleged Ram Temple donation theft, examination paper leak cases and ethanol blending policy. Opposition leaders are also expected to seek detailed discussions on these issues while demanding accountability from the government.
The possibility of introducing additional legislation, including a fresh proposal on delimitation linked to women’s reservation, has also attracted attention. Although the Bill is not part of the current legislative agenda, the government indicated that more Bills could be introduced after following parliamentary procedures and consulting the Business Advisory Committees.
Regional parties, particularly from southern India, have expressed concerns over the delimitation issue, saying any proposal affecting the representation of states should be discussed extensively before being brought before Parliament.
With both the government and Opposition standing firm on their priorities, the Monsoon Session is expected to feature spirited debates, political sparring and crucial discussions on legislation and national issues over the coming weeks.
