Having inspired Argentina’s run to a second consecutive World Cup final at the age of 39, the veteran forward strengthened his case for another individual accolade despite the final defeat.
Attention also turned to Spain’s title-winning squad, with goalkeeper Unai Simón and teenage sensation Lamine Yamal emerging among the favourites for the Golden Glove and Best Young Player awards after their outstanding performances throughout the competition.
France may have missed out on a place in the final, but Mbappe’s record-breaking campaign once again underlined his status as one of world football’s biggest stars.
