Wakefield, Quebec (Rajeev Sharma): A ski resort in western Quebec remained closed on Thursday after a 13-year-old girl from Ottawa was critically injured in a chairlift incident, authorities said.
Emergency services were called to Centre Vorlage near Wakefield at around 2:10 p.m. on Wednesday following reports of an accident as the teenager was disembarking from a ski lift, according to the MRC des Collines-de-l’Outaouais Police Service.
Police spokesperson Sgt. Martin Fournel said the girl’s clothing became caught in the chairlift, leading to the serious incident.
Two doctors who were skiing at the resort at the time provided immediate medical assistance before the girl was transported to a hospital in Wakefield. She was later transferred to the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO) in Ottawa, where she remains in critical condition.
In a statement posted on social media, Centre Vorlage confirmed the hill would stay closed on Thursday and said it is fully cooperating with the ongoing police investigation.
“We are deeply saddened by this event. Our most sincere thoughts are with the family during this difficult time, and we extend to them our deepest compassion,” the resort said.
Authorities have not released further details as the investigation continues.
