Rajeev Sharma :- Constable Tarun Bali of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), who sustained critical injuries while performing official duties in northern Ontario, succumbed to his injuries, police confirmed on Tuesday. Another officer injured in the incident remains under medical care.
Originally belonging to a family from Punjab, Bali had been serving with the OPP for nearly two-and-a-half years and was attached to the Dufferin Detachment. At the time of the incident, he was on a special assignment with the James Bay Detachment.
The tragic incident occurred around midday near Hearst in Ontario while a police team was conducting an investigation. According to preliminary findings, an 18-year-old suspect, who had reportedly fled from a hospital earlier, allegedly struck Constable Bali with a vehicle, causing fatal injuries. Despite extensive efforts by medical personnel, the officer could not be saved.
Police have taken the teenager into custody and registered a case of first-degree murder. Authorities said the investigation is being led by the OPP Criminal Investigation Branch, with assistance from the Office of the Chief Coroner and the Ontario Forensic Pathology Service.
Tarun Bali was the son of Ashok Bali, a native of Nangal in Punjab who later settled in Canada with his family. The young officer had married Komal, a woman of Punjabi origin residing in Canada, about two years ago.
The news of Bali’s death has sent shockwaves through both the Canadian and Punjabi communities. As a mark of respect, emergency service vehicles are expected to accompany his body during its transfer to Toronto for post-mortem examination and further official procedures.
