Pranavi Urs Makes Asian Games History With India’s First Women’s Golf Gold

Aichi-Nagoya (Rajeev Sharma): Pranavi Urs produced a remarkable comeback under pressure to create history at the 2026 Asian Games, becoming the first Indian woman to win an individual golf gold medal at the continental event.

The 23-year-old golfer entered the final round with a three-shot advantage at Kasugai Country Club’s East Course but found herself in trouble early after a triple bogey on the third hole. Instead of allowing the setback to derail her challenge, Urs steadied her game and fought her way back into contention.

A birdie on the sixth hole helped settle her round, and she remained composed through the closing holes. Urs eventually signed for a level-par 70 to complete the tournament at 15-under 265, finishing one stroke ahead of the chasing pair.

Singapore’s Shannon Xuan Yin Tan and China’s Yin Ruoning both ended at 14-under 266. Yin, a six-time LPGA winner and 2023 Women’s PGA Championship major champion, secured the silver after defeating Tan in a playoff.

The victory ended a 24-year wait for India to claim an Asian Games golf title. The country’s previous individual gold had come through Shiv Kapur in the men’s event at the 2002 Busan Games.

Urs’ achievement also marked another milestone for Indian women’s golf. Aditi Ashok had previously won silver in the women’s individual competition at the 2023 Hangzhou Asian Games, which had been India’s first medal in the event. Urs herself finished fourth at Hangzhou.

The gold was India’s fourth Asian Games golf title overall. The country’s first came at the 1982 New Delhi Games, where Lakshman Singh won the men’s individual competition and was also part of India’s victorious men’s team.

Urs’ successful campaign did not end with the individual event. She teamed up with Aditi Ashok and Diksha Dagar to win a silver medal in the women’s team competition, giving India its first Asian Games medal in that format.

India finished the team event at 14-under 546, while China secured gold with a 22-under 538 total. Chinese Taipei took the bronze medal at 10-under 550.

Aditi Ashok produced her strongest round of the tournament on the final day, shooting a three-under 67 to finish 14th individually at two-over 282. Diksha Dagar closed the competition in a tie for 18th with a total of five-over 285.

For Urs, however, the week will be remembered for the individual triumph that placed her name in the history of Indian golf.
