PM Narendra Modi’s Influence Dissuaded Vladimir Putin from Tactical Nuclear Threat, Says Polish Deputy Foreign Minister

New Delhi (Gurpreet Singh): Prime Minister Narendra Modi played a pivotal role in dissuading Russian President Vladimir Putin from deploying tactical nuclear weapons during a critical juncture of the Ukraine conflict in late 2022, according to Poland’s Deputy Foreign Minister Władysław Teofil Bartoszewski. Speaking at a joint press briefing following the India-Poland Joint Economic Commission meeting in New Delhi on Monday, Bartoszewski described the Indian leader as one of the very few global statesmen capable of exerting meaningful diplomatic pressure on the Russian President. He highlighted that New Delhi possesses unique leverage in international efforts to resolve the European conflict due to its decades-long strategic partnership with the Russian Federation and its historical ties with the Soviet Union.

Beyond the discussions on global security and conflict resolution, the high-level meeting underscored a strong renewal of bilateral ties, with Poland formally reiterating its support for India’s aspiration to secure a permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council. The Polish Deputy Foreign Minister acknowledged that while structural reforms within the council remain complex due to the required unanimous consent and veto power of current permanent members, Warsaw firmly backs a more expansive and representative council. Furthermore, Bartoszewski signalled a major expansion in defence cooperation between the two nations, revealing that officials are currently finalizing an agreement on the exchange of classified information to unlock deeper military collaboration. This collaboration includes active Indian interest in acquiring Polish defence platforms, drone production technology, and a proposed 1-billion-dollar satellite programme involving Indian manufacturing capabilities, bolstered by Poland’s recent 44-billion-euro European Union defence modernization loan.

Complementing the strategic and defence updates, Poland’s Deputy Minister of Economic Development and Technology, Michał Baranowski, stated that bilateral economic ties are poised for unprecedented growth ahead of Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk’s official visit to India later this year. Describing the ongoing negotiations for the India-European Union Free Trade Agreement as the mother of all trade agreements, Baranowski emphasized that its eventual conclusion will unlock vast avenues for businesses across both regions. With annual bilateral trade currently hovering around 6 billion dollars, the Polish delegation expressed immense confidence that this volume could realistically double in the coming years, with formal commercial announcements expected to take center stage during the upcoming prime ministerial summit.
