NIA Intensifies Crackdown in Shopian, Searches Banned Seminary and Ex-Jamaat Leader’s Home

Shopian (Rajeev Sharma): The National Investigation Agency (NIA) launched coordinated search operations in Jammu and Kashmir’s Shopian district on Monday, targeting two locations linked to organisations under scrutiny for alleged unlawful activities.

One of the searches was conducted at Darul Uloom Sirajul Uloom in the Imam Sahib area, an educational institution that was recently declared an illegal entity by authorities. The seminary, known for offering both religious instruction and mainstream education, was searched by NIA officials during the early morning hours.

Simultaneously, another investigation team carried out a search at the residence of Shahzada Aurangzeb, former head of the banned Jamaat-e-Islami in Jammu and Kashmir, located in the Molu Chitragam area of Shopian.

Officials said the operations were part of an ongoing probe aimed at gathering evidence related to suspected anti-national activities and possible organisational links under investigation by central agencies.

Security personnel maintained a strong presence around both locations as investigators examined documents and other materials. Authorities have not yet confirmed whether any recoveries or detentions were made during the searches.

The action comes weeks after Darul Uloom Sirajul Uloom was officially banned, a move that sparked widespread attention due to the institution’s role in educating a large number of students in the region.

Investigators are expected to analyse the materials collected during the raids to determine possible connections and establish whether further legal action is required.

The latest searches are being viewed as part of broader efforts by national security agencies to tighten oversight on entities suspected of involvement in activities considered a threat to public order and security in Jammu and Kashmir.

More details are expected to emerge as the NIA continues its investigation.
