Landslide Tragedy in Darjeeling Claims 24 Lives, Rescue Efforts Hindered by Rain

Darjeeling (Rajeev Sharma): The number of confirmed deaths from the recent landslides in West Bengal’s Darjeeling district has risen to 24, with rescue operations still underway in difficult conditions. Several people are feared missing, and ongoing rainfall continues to slow down relief efforts, officials reported on Monday.

Triggered by relentless rain over the past few days, the landslides have caused widespread destruction in the hill region. Entire stretches of roads have collapsed or been blocked by debris, cutting off access to multiple areas and leaving hundreds of tourists stranded.

According to state authorities, one more body was recovered late Sunday night, taking the death toll to 24. North Bengal Development Minister Udayan Guha confirmed the update and said the situation remains precarious. “There are still people unaccounted for. Rescue teams are working continuously, but the weather is a major obstacle,” he said.

Emergency teams, including personnel from disaster response units and local administration, are on the ground searching through rubble and clearing paths. Meanwhile, temporary shelters and medical aid are being provided to those displaced.

The state government has asked people in vulnerable zones to remain alert and avoid travel unless necessary. With rain expected to continue, the focus remains on reaching isolated villages and preventing further casualties.
