Shimla (Rajeev Sharma): The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast a sharp increase in monsoon activity across Himachal Pradesh, prompting authorities to issue high-level weather alerts for several districts over the next two days. With heavy to extremely heavy rainfall expected in many areas, officials have urged residents and tourists to remain cautious and avoid unnecessary travel.
For July 19, the weather office has predicted widespread light to moderate showers across the state, while Kangra, Mandi and Kullu are expected to receive heavier rainfall. These districts have been placed under an Orange Alert, indicating the possibility of severe weather conditions. A Yellow Alert has also been issued for Chamba, Bilaspur, Hamirpur, Una, Shimla, Solan, Sirmaur, Kinnaur and Lahaul-Spiti, where isolated heavy showers are likely.
The situation is expected to intensify on July 20, when the IMD has issued a Red Alert for Mandi, Kangra, Shimla, Solan, Sirmaur, Hamirpur and Una. According to the forecast, these districts may witness prolonged spells of intense rainfall that could significantly disrupt normal life. Chamba, Kullu and Bilaspur will remain under an Orange Alert, with heavy rain also anticipated there.
Disaster management teams and district administrations have been instructed to stay on standby, while emergency services have been asked to prepare for possible rescue and relief operations if required.
Meteorologists have cautioned that persistent rainfall may increase the likelihood of flash floods, landslides, mudslides and rockfalls, particularly in mountainous and vulnerable areas. Overflowing streams and seasonal rivulets could pose additional risks, while road connectivity, electricity supply and water services may also be affected.
The administration has advised people living near rivers, nullahs and steep slopes to remain alert and shift to safer locations if local authorities issue warnings. Tourists visiting the hill state have also been requested to postpone travel plans in areas likely to experience heavy rainfall.
Officials have appealed to the public to follow weather advisories closely and avoid venturing into landslide-prone zones or crossing overflowing streams. Motorists have been asked to check road conditions before beginning their journeys, as several routes could witness temporary closures due to debris or waterlogging.
With the monsoon expected to stay active in the coming days, the IMD has urged citizens to remain prepared and cooperate with local authorities to minimise risks during the adverse weather conditions.
