Rajouri (Rajeev Sharma): Continuous heavy rainfall caused flash floods in Jammu and Kashmir’s Rajouri district on Sunday, inundating several low-lying areas and disrupting normal life. The sudden surge in the Dharhali River sent torrents of water into the Bela New Bus Stand, where multiple parked vehicles were swept away by the powerful current.
The incident followed hours of persistent rainfall that rapidly increased the river’s water level. Eyewitnesses described floodwaters entering the bus stand within minutes, leaving little time to move vehicles or secure property. Videos circulating on social media showed vehicles being dragged by the muddy currents as residents watched from safer locations.
District officials said emergency response teams have been mobilised to monitor vulnerable locations and assess the extent of the damage. While there were no immediate reports of loss of life, authorities are keeping a close watch on areas prone to flooding and landslides.
The administration has issued a high alert across the district, warning that the wet spell is expected to continue. Residents have been strongly advised to avoid unnecessary travel, particularly through hilly stretches and waterlogged roads, where conditions may deteriorate rapidly.
Officials have also urged people to maintain a safe distance from rivers, streams and seasonal nullahs, as water levels could rise further if rainfall persists. Drivers have been cautioned against attempting to cross flooded roads or bridges, even if water appears shallow.
Local authorities said disaster management teams remain on standby to respond to any emergency, while continuous surveillance is being carried out in flood-sensitive areas. Citizens have been asked to follow official weather advisories and cooperate with emergency personnel until conditions improve.
With monsoon activity intensifying across parts of Jammu and Kashmir, the administration has appealed to the public to remain alert and prioritise safety as more rainfall is forecast over the coming days.
