Washington (Rajeev Sharma): Donald Trump has dismissed accusations mentioned in a document reportedly linked to the suspect involved in the recent security breach during a high-profile media event in Washington, calling the claims baseless and offensive.
In an interaction with CBS, the US President spoke about the chaotic moments that unfolded when gunfire was reported near the venue of the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner. He said security personnel acted quickly to escort attendees, including himself, to safety.
Trump acknowledged that he initially hesitated to leave the scene, wanting to understand the situation as it developed. However, he said Secret Service agents insisted on immediate evacuation and ensured that all protected individuals were secured without delay.
The issue took a sharper turn after references to Trump surfaced in a manifesto allegedly written by the suspect. Responding strongly, the President rejected the remarks outright, stating that he has no connection to the claims and describing the attacker as mentally unstable.
He also criticised media outlets for giving attention to the contents of the document, arguing that such coverage risks amplifying harmful narratives. Trump reiterated that he has previously been cleared of allegations and said attempts to link him to the suspect’s statements were misleading.
Despite the disruption, Trump supported the continuation of the annual event, urging organisers to hold it again soon. He said such incidents should not be allowed to overshadow democratic institutions or public discourse.
Investigations into the incident are ongoing, with authorities examining the suspect’s background and possible motives while maintaining heightened security at major public gatherings.
