New Delhi (Gurpreet Singh): Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Seychelles for a three-day historic state visit, receiving an exceptionally warm welcome from both the host government and members of the local Indian diaspora. Upon landing at the Seychelles International Airport in the afternoon, the Prime Minister was received directly on the tarmac by President Dr. Patrick Herminie, followed by a formal ceremonial Guard of Honour. The diplomatic visit, which marks the Golden Jubilee of the island nation’s National Day and celebrates 50 years of bilateral relations, began with an immediate emphasis on the deep cultural and public ties shared between the two Indian Ocean neighbors.
The arrival was underscored by vibrant cultural showcases organized by the resident Indian community, who gathered in large numbers outside the airport terminal waving Indian flags. In a striking display of heritage preservation, a local diaspora group greeted the Prime Minister with a traditional dance performance from the Kutch region of Gujarat. Reflecting on the reception, the Prime Minister shared his appreciation on social media, praising the diaspora as a living cultural bridge that has meticulously preserved and celebrated diverse traditions from various parts of India across generations.
The cultural immersion continued later in the evening with an intricate Bharatanatyam performance presented by community members. The classical recital creatively blended a traditional bhajan dedicated to Lord Rama with a rhythmic, powerful rendition of the Shiva Tandava Stotram. Beyond the cultural festivities, the opening itinerary featured a significant environmental gesture, as President Herminie accompanied the Prime Minister to the Seychelles’ National Botanical Garden. The two leaders toured the historic giant tortoise enclosure before jointly participating in a ceremonial tree plantation drive, symbolizing the long-term growth and resilience of the India-Seychelles partnership.
